Pros & Cons

  • Really good career development opportunities. A structured graduate program which includes 3 different rotations aimed at giving you experience in technical, projects and administrative type roles. The structured graduate program includes a discipline specific list of required competencies and a large training budget to help you achieve them.
  • Great culture, friendly people, great location, latest technology, big on training and development.
  • Portfolio of world class assets means wide range of opportunities are available. Supportive and open working environment. Flexible working arrangements. Very well compensated.
  • Chevron has an extremely positive and supportive company culture - everyone is very friendly and always willing to help out. I also like that Chevron is committed to protecting the environment and having a positive impact on the communities in which they work. The Horizons graduate program is also fantastic - 5 years of dedicated support, mentoring, and endless training opportunities to ensure you become a well-rounded graduate.
  • The process of learning from my team and the support I receive from them.
  • It is a very large company and there are a lot of processes to follow which can be difficult to navigate as a graduate... but there are always people willing to help you out!

Career Prospects
I am currently in a graduate program which lasts 5 years and I do 3 rotations through the business. There is plenty of opportunity to choose a direction and I see people getting notified of new positions in the company all the time.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Chevron are very committed to helping the communities in which we operate. Chevron have donated to relief funds to help with the 2019/2020 Australian bushfires; they have helped donate medical equipment for the COVID-19 pandemic; they have set up an Onslow Relief Fund to help small businesses in Onslow through the COVID-19 pandemic; and they have set up a 2:1 donation matching for the Activ Foundation, The Smith Family, and Zonta House charities where Chevron will pay double the amount of any employee contributions. These are the most relevant at the moment but there are always ongoing community projects which Chevron is involved in.

Culture
Chevron has an amazing company culture - their main values are high performance, integrity and trust, diversity and inclusion, partnership, and protecting people and the environment. Employees are supported in their professional development and encouraged to challenge the status quo to find better ways of working. Everyone is very friendly and always willing to help out, and there is a lot of cross-functional communication to solve problems. Most teams have a weekly socialization activity - sometimes drinks, playing tennis, quiz nights, etc. It is a wonderful environment to work in and I enjoy coming to work every day.

Diversity

Diversity
Chevron have many employee "diversity networks" which hold events for employees to come together and empower one another. There is a Women's Network, Asian Network, PRIDE Network, Indigenous Network, Hispanic Network, Disability Network, etc. The company goes to great lengths to provide support and enable visibility of issues of all employees.

Building a tool to manage the interactions between project systems. No tool like it has been built so building the tool is breaking new ground. Managing the project vulnerabilities by assigning and tracking the documents which will address them.

Management
Yes, they are constantly checking in and having fortnightly catch ups. I have a mentor I catch-up with every two weeks and provide guidance on how to increase my networks and set up training and career development plan. I meet quarterly with my Supervisor to discuss my performance management plan and upcoming training and how I'm doing in my role. There is great support from all my managers and I can access them when I want and they are quick to reply.

Chevron have very nice offices and will eventually be moving to their new building which is currently under construction at Elizabeth Quay. This new building will have amazing views, will be very modern, and easily accessible from the train station. In their current location Chevron have end of trip facilities for people who wish to cycle to work; a gym; access to tennis courts; and a car park (with limited access). The dress code is business casual Mon-Thurs and casual on Fridays.

Recruitment

Recruitment
I was hired as a graduate after completing Chevron's vacation program so I did not need to reapply. For the vacation program there was only one interview assessment where you were asked questions and were also required to deliver a 10 minute presentation (which you are given one week to prepare beforehand, with a predetermined topic).

Training

Training
There is an endless pool of training at Chevron, especially as a graduate. Everyone in the company is placed into a 'development path' which sets out the required competencies for each role, and there are training courses available for achieving all of these competencies. There are technical courses (e.g. on compressors, pumps, etc.); soft skills courses (e.g. on presentation skills, time management, etc.); and courses on how to use particular software tools at the company. Chevron's graduate program is by far the best I have seen in terms of training opportunities.

Work Hours

Work Hours
The typical hours are 8am-4pm but Chevron are very flexible about work hours as long as you get your work done. Chevron also typically offer a "compressed work week" where you can work a 9-day fortnight (and have every second Friday off) if you work an extra hour each day. This is absolutely fantastic for maintaining a work-life balance.
